fuel injector washer?

Hi Guys,

Started my freelander this afternoon to get the kids from school, and it sounded a bit rough under hard acceleration load. Got home, removed the plastic engine cover, and saw the end injector had soot all around it.. And obviously because the cover was now off, the noise was more plain to hear..

Took it to my local garage (very good rep & reasonable pices), and he said that my fuel injector seal had gone.. He said to drop it off there tomorrow morning and id have it back by 2pm.. And it would cost £70 all in.

He did say i was lucky it was the seal, and not the actual injector, as he reckons they go for £320 each

Anyhow, i said id drop the car off tomorrow.. But ive got home and looked on ebay, and you can get four of them for £1.99!! Am i looking at the right things here? They look like copper washers in the photos, and itll **** me off if im paying £70 for something thats really worth 50p..

If i am looking at the right things, is it possible to do the job myself? I imagine you have to have a special tool to remove the injector, which i dont have... But if you just need standard tools, i wouldnt mind giving it a crack myself..

Any suggestions friends??

It can be a long job getting the injectors out - my guy took 5 hrs of working in wd40 and juggling to get 4 out - obviously not 5 chargeable hours but it can be a difficult one - at least an hour or two. £70 doesn't sound too bad for me.

The washers themselves will be dirt cheap. Most of the money will be labour, though I'm not sure how difficult the injectors are to remove on the L-series engine fitted to your car. The later Td4 BMW engines injectors are known to seize in & cause lots of problems.

£320 for a new injector is over-egging it a bit. They aren't cheap but not that expensive either.

Hi guys,

Had my landy back this afternoon.. £96 all in. Kit was £8, the rest was labour and VAT!! Never mind, anything less than a one - er from a garage is good these days eh? Car pulls like a train again now.

Does anyone know if you need a special tool to get the injector out?? If i had the tool i would have given it a crack myself...

Is it a TD4? If so there are two torx screws with small nuts on top - take nuts off and with the correct torx socket unscrew each side a little at a time and hey presto out comes the injector - ok now pinch yourself because that was a dream - the reality is like mine the stud could snap then you have to get them all out and get camcover off to do the repairs.

Seriously they can be a right pain to get out - there is no special tool except to final last resort of a slide hammer and brute force by which time you have damaged the injector beyond use anyhow.

Lots of wd40 and some gentle juggling and leverage with something under a screwdriver to protect the plastic cam cover worked for me last time but then a garage mate took them all out recently.

There are kits you can buy to extract injectors but they aren't cheap. Just try ebay & search for injector puller. (A search for BMW injector puller will give you a shock.)
