Hey all,

i have a problem with my fuel guage..

1. it loves a full tank of petrol
2. but when it is a 1/4 left in the tank it is really empty
3. is it an easy fix before i take it to my mechanic

thanks all

Likely to be a faulty sender unit in tank - but check the connections (top of tank under drivers seat if a 90, behind rear wheel if a 110)

Sender basically alters the resistance - and therefore voltage - getting to the gauge. Full tank = 12 volts!

If sender needs replacing, a straightforward job - couple of guys (think Saxmanuk one of them) have done recently - just took a bit of trial and error to get located correctly on the locating pins

Saxman's post added - 2nd page worth a read, as the reading fault was due to the locating pins - worth a check before replacing the sender:

The sender unit is a 5min job on a 90. Pattern sender units are OK but i always buy Genuine rubber seal and sealing ring. You just tap the old sealing ring around. Remove sender. Fit new one with seal and tap sealing ring around. When i did the last one it was leaking from the sender because the lugs had become loose a quick whack with a hammer and screw driver soon sealed it. There are Faults with the gauges as well. I recently had to replace the sender on mine only to realize that it was the gauge that was fffffd. I was going to buy and different gauge and sender. But because of the baffles and the pic up tube being in the way i stumped up for a britpart gauge at about £40. Easy job to replace the lot only took about 10 mins
