fuel filter probs today

it was chugging on start up and hunting on tickover.the ther day it wouldnt start at all.got the aa to get me back.it seemed like the filter.
got the filter off from under the wheelarch and changed it.the pump seemed to working but it still wouldnt start.
i took off the round plastic housing with a fuel inlet and outlet and dimantled it.there was nothing in there but a plastic cone and diesel.should it have another filter in it,with the pipes still off there was nothing coming out of them when ignition was turned on.
does this mean a fuel pump in gone aswell.

The system is self-priming - but did you follow the correct re-start procedure after changing the filter?

Switch on the ignition but do not try to start.
You should hear the pump whirring and perhaps hear the diesel gurgling in the feed pipes to the filter.
The pump will shut off after about 2 minutes.
Switch off ignition and repeat the above procedure at least 3 times.
Then try to start the engine.
It could well fire and then die or stutter a bit at first.
If so repeat the switching on without starting again, a couple more times.

It's the same if you run the tank dry.
Dont keep cranking the engine - it doesn't help - just keep running the pump a few more times.

did that and the pump just kept running never cut off,i could hear the diesel coming through and the black thing that looks like a filter houding was full when removed.

If the pump didn't stop that means that there was no resistance to the flow.

You must have a major leak.

Check all the pump and filter connections.

The pump /filter container should of course be totally dry.

Or would it mean no diesel coming through

had the injectors recond it seems to be ok now.all four were down on pressure but leak off test was ok.took them to a n injection specialist.
