Flip up the rear seats and look for a flap of carpet that flips up to show a
depression in the body.

Yep, really well hidden, once had to help out a lady in distress in one of
those, took about 10 mins to lacate the jack. God, the stuff we had to move
off the back seat, some people do carry loads of gear around. >

You'd think Isuzu (who designed/made the MU/Wizard which the frontera is a
re-badged clone of) would put it in a more accessable spot.

Some times it is located up the rear side of the n/s wheel arch behind
the panel

Yep, went and dug my Chiltons Frontera manual from the Bighorn,

3 door is in the rear side trim behind the wheel arch, It's the 5 door that
has the gear under the rear seats.

Sorry, make that Haynes manual.

checked under both rear seats (lifted mats ) the is no depression or any
sign of a panel anywhere

not sure if yours would be the same (I've got an estate 2000) however you
actually need to lift the driver side rear seat up. If you imagine that you
are sat behind the driver the wheel brace is directly under you. The jack is
in the boot again well hidden on the left in a compartment.

I agree totally though they are not that well placed and the manual is
somewhat useless.

Some of the newer models 5 door models *may* also have them in the cushion
rather than a depression in the floor depending on the country of
manufacture. see if the bottom of the rear seats has a hatch or panel that
pulls off or open.

Thats alright, it does strike me as a bit stupid tho, surely it's more sense
to have the gear int he same spot thtoughout the range... the 3 door is
simply a short version of the 5 door. they should both have enough space
under the seats, or both have enough space in the sides.

So why have them in different places fot eh two models? prolly a
beancounter or higher brass idea rather than an engineers...

The 3-door's back axle is right under the back seat.
Probably there isn't room for the depression to house
the jack.
