I’m building up the front doors at the moment, bit the bullet and went for replacements from SP4x4 but will rebuild the old ones and sell them on at a later date.

I’m just wondering about the screws that are used to retain everything to the door frame. How many are you supposed to use (my Land Rover exploded view says 11 per door?) and are there certain positions or is it just a case of even spacing based on common-sense? It’s no good me referring to the old doors as reference because they’ve got random holes everywhere! The SP doors do have holes in the frames here and there but but they look to be on centre line rather than offset to one side for the glass U-channel and they’re at least 6mm diameter.

I assume with the small self-tapper retaining screws, you drill a pilot hole through the assembly and into the frame and then screw in?

You know that thought crossed my mind! Mainly because I didn't feel great about drilling holes into doors that are open to the elements and like to corrode at the first opportunity.
You sir are a star!
I was going to use Sikaflex...what did you use?

Believe it or not, I used roof and gutter sealant. I think it was this one. LINKY It's bitumen based, sticks like sh@t, blends in with the channel and is waterproof.

Inhave to admit that I drilled mine to take self-tappers!
Hadn't thought about Sikaflex or mastic, although that is starting to appeal to me now!!

I drilled pilot holes and they screwed mine in, didn't think about using sikaflex, probably would of been a better option! Got my doors from SP too, have you had to make any brackets to support the inner panel? The bracket seems a bit far down on one side and non existent on the other!?

Mine were just Britpart ones from local LR independent. I had to create a bracket to support the inner panel.

Quick question: did you also bond the longest glass U-channel to the inside of the bottom bracket?
IIRC i didn't do much with it at the bottom. Reason being that it was so rigid that it wasn't going anywhere and after some testing of window up and down I decided it was rigid enough to hold the glass in place. The glass is held quite securely by the mechanism anyway. I felt it was ok.

Thanks for your reply; in that case I’m tempted to do the same. I’ll give it a try tomorrow.
You'll probably still be ok. My only thought is that I used new window U channel (from SP 4x4 IIRC) Which was rigid, possibly because it was new. I know the original channel was flimsy due to the fact that the bottom 2 or 3 inches were like brown lace. If yours is in good nick, or you're using new, then I think it'll be ok.

Yeah, my channel is new and feels good and strong. I think I read in your build thread that you didn't use the shims? I'll try some trial fits of the glass & channel to see if I can do without.

OK, so how the hell do you get the glass in place? What’s the secret?
Hmmmmmmm,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if only I could remember. I looked through my pictures and can't find any of use. However, I think I disconnected the glass from the mechanism. Do you have two connection points, from the scissor, with two little bolts on each one (trying to picture it) Wiggled the glass in to the two channels, bolted the mechanism back on to the door, then connected the glass back to the scissor part of the mechanism.

Thanks for the above. I havent’t got the mech’ on the door as yet. I’ve just dry fitted the felt channels to see what sort of a fit the glass would be but I can’t get the darned glass into the channels and up through the door. I’ll try again tomorrow when I’m less tired...oh the joy of it

i Just followed the LR workshop manual, they took a bit of persuasion but went in the end.
