Hi,

Did a bit of greenlanding yesterday, then the usual checks after, but found when I shook the FO/S wheel it seemed to move in and out a little bit, checked the FN/S as well, does same thing, but not as bad. As if there is slight play in the front axle. :confused:

Could be a number of things according to Haynes; but any ideas, gratefully received.

either yer wheel bearing or yer swivel bearings. jack th efooker up and wiggle the bastid. you should be able to see if yer swivel are leaping about or if its just yer wheel bearing. yer might need someone else to have a look while yer wiggling

Jacked her up, there is play somewhere. To narrow down the problem, and sorry for asking a very basic question (haynes only tells how to remove/refit).

But how do you tighten the wheel bearings? :rolleyes:

am sure its in yer heinze manwell , have yer tried looking at the maintenince bit at the front?
anyway yer need a hub socket. or you can get by with a big screw driver and a hammer if yer really pushed fer time or really tight and dint wanna buy one.

take yer drive flanges off and you'll see a big nut and a lock washer. flatten the lock washer so you can turn the nut. now remove the first nut and the washer . you now have access to yer second nut. tighten it up by hand ( dint use a bar) whilst turning the wheel. only tighten it enough to remove the play in it other wise yule gub yer bearings.
there is a set freeplay for doing these and am sure its in yer manwell, but i dint bother with it as ave done a few . now reistall yer washer , if its still in usable condition, if not get a new one.
then fit yer other nut and tigten reet up, knock over lock washer and re fit flange.
job done

if you want to do a check and repack of yer bearings you'll need to remove the wheel and remove the hub , which you really should do to prolong the life of yer bearings.

Yes, haynes mentions it, but not how to tighen. She has a service about every 5000, and shes due again in a couple of weeks.
