hi all, im new to the range rovers and have purchased a spares or repairs rangey. the front axle has locked up completely and the buggy is unmoveable. the wheels wsill turn 180 degrees before seising up. any ideas on what this could be? and roughly how much damage it will do to my bank? help is very apreciated :)

If it's the front axle, easiest route would be a secondhand one, try rangeroverbreakers:) However it is normally difficult to turn a single front wheel with it jacked due to the action of the viscous coupling, you need both fronts off the ground.

A better description needed. As Data says with one front wheel off the ground you should be able to turn it with great difficulty. With both wheels off the ground you should be able to turn wheel reasonably easily other wheel will turn in opposite direction to first. If you cannot turn with one wheel off ground viscous coupling is seized.
PS what is a buggy?

thanks for the replies. i ment buggy as in the vehicle. apparently it started via a whirring noise coming from the front is all the information i am given. after that he says both front wheels locked and the rangey is undrivable. when all wheels are on the ground the front wheels only turn 180 degreesefore locking. the rac man who recovered the vehicle suspects the axle. could this be correct? and would it have caused any damage to the transfer box or any other expensive parts?

It's a case of suck it and see i am afraid. First drain oil (if any) from axle and look for metal chips. Lift front end and try turning wheels see if they turn as described previously. Very unusual for this to happen unless diff has disintigrated and is being locked by debris. Only way is to strip it and take a look.

i will do and get back to you. thanks for the information. could this have done any damage to the transfer box?

That remains to be seen. I suspect not. Take front prop off and see if it drives without it. If it won't you have a serious diff problem.

Well a few things could have happened. The main carriage bearings are supported by the half shafts so if they are worn the diff should still turn. You could have lost teeth from pinion or crown wheel and one is climbing onto the other locking diff. You could have a broken planet pin that would cause a lockup. Only way to find out is to strip it. Can't really give you anymore info than that. If you remove prop and axle turns it is odds on a planet pin if it still does not, odds on pinion and crown wheel. My bet is crown wheel and pinion.
