Hi, bin a while but need your help please.
father in law has a 03 TD4 ES manual with 76K. Couple of weeks ago had a long trip to Shropshire for a weeks fishing car ran like a dream, came home and hasn't used car for bout a week. Went to use it she started fine but kept coughing and farting and loss of power and an amount of white smoke this coincided with fuel tank being just about empty. Put half tank of diesel in no change so I've changed diesel filter tucked up near rear o/s wheel made no difference. However no power 30mph max but all of a sudden engine management light comes on flashing and car literally takes off until you have to slow down and then accel again where it just like having a kangeroo in the tank until it clears.
When I had my TD4 if you turned the key you could hear the lift pump whirr until the press built up and then it cut off prior to starting this one doesn't stop which makes me thinks a fuel press sensor fault or the epumps knackered.
Any Ideas befor he pays for it putting on the test book at the steelers.

Many thanks
Oh by the way the Disco 2 V8 is still running sweet but the fuel bowser I have to tow has made me decide to swap it for another Freelander next year.
Cheers

could be the filter on the tank pump just lift your mat up under offside back seat then undo the screws around the plate then take the pipe of simple push in conectors then get a sutible drift and knock the ring anti clock wise then lift the pump out you will see the onboard filter at the bottom it does pull of but be warned if it is serverly blocked it may have done damage to the pump like mine did as the pump was over pumping and wore out
hope this helps

At a guess… un this is a guess based on logic… I would assume normally the pump switches orf after the fool system has bin primed. If it dun’t switch orf then either the system hasn’t bin primed, or it can’t sense it’s bin primed to know to switch orf the pump. Hence blockages (pipe/filter), non return valve leaks back (if it has a non return valve that is), or the pumps struggling to prime the system coz it int powerful enough as it’s feked.

Hey, thanks guys nice to hear from you hippo it's bin a while. OK here goes changed the fuel filter, drained all the lines, today took out the tank sender unit there was not a skerrit of muck in the strainer.
Is there actually a pump in the tank ? or ist it just the sender unit as the pump appear to be under the rear O/S wheel same place as the filter as theres no noise from the unit in the tank. if there is that'd mean there are 3 diesel pumps on the dam thing
I've timed how long it takes for the pump to switch off and it's around 1 minute whereas on my TD4 it only ran for around 15secs before stopping.
I agree with you hippo goin on test book to see if it's the pump or press sensor. Which is the more likely to trigger the ECU light to come on albeit intermittently.
Once again guys thanks for the info.
