Hello there,,,I am looking for a small SUV. This will be my first SUV. I am
looking for something for very light offroading---ie just off the beaten
path, some beach driving, and light snow. Before I started research I had
pinned it down to RAV4, CRV, ESCAPE. I soon realized that all these were 4wd
or awd--there was no low gear which could get me in trouble. I am currently
looking at the Jeep Liberty and will look at the Freelander---though it is
getting out of my price range a bit. Any comments please! Am I missing
another vehicle?

I hate to say it but you might want to look at the Nissan Xterra. It's
more truck than any of those things.

Between the two, the liberty for sure. Freelander ranks low on the
reliability scale...

It would help if you told us what country you are in.

The Freelander and Liberty are 4wd as well. You will need 4wd for
what you are intending to do.

I would suggest also looking at Trackers and Vitaras (same vehicle,
different nameplate). These will be able to handle what you are
intending to do, and will cost a lot less than either the Liberty or
Freelander.

I have a 92 Tracker which I have used for light off-roading, mostly
logging roads in the British Columbia, Canada, mountains. It has been
able to handle everything I have tried to do.

Have you considered a used Defender?

I am a mopar man myself, But the wife keeps going to the land of the raising
sun. Honda chic herself. I though about the Xterra too.
But then the Liberty is going to TD next year. In europe they do well.
