Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone would be able to recommend a set of tyres for a Freelander sport size 235-50-R18? I bought the Freelander 2nd hand with a set of Accelera tyres on it. Today going down our country road in the snow I met a tractor carting a load of stones and I couldn't get stopped... ended up bouncing off the tractor.
I know i'd probably be better off with a set of winter tyres and change them back come the spring but is anyone currently using a set of tyres that seem good all year round?
My spare wheel has a Continental 4X4 contact tyre on it which seems to have a more aggressive tread than the current tyre, does anyone use them and are they good in the winter?

Thanks

Yeah I think I'll get a set of snow chains if the snow looks set to continue for a while. Bit of damage around the rear driver side, I had to fling the car into a hedge to try to stop but the ack swung out and hit the front wheel of the tractor.
Just looked and the Continental tyres get pretty bad reviews. I have the local tyre depot trying to source some good winter/all season tyres from some wholesalers.

where abouts in 't north are you, i was up and down the M1 few times and it wasn't too bad, except about 6 ish around loughgall.

ah, im down near pomeroy, bout 2 and a bit inches here at min. be fun if it freezes tonight, im workin tomorrow

Thanks for the recommendations, neither of them are available in my size :(

I take it that it would be possible for me to get a different set of wheels for my freelander, could I replace my 18" wheels with a set of 16" wheels without causing damage?

Mine is a HSE with 17" wheels. I have the same problem. Plumped for Pirelli Scorpion STR. They are badged as all season M+S.

Mine an HSE with 17", so I swapped (well, bought) a set of 16" and stuck AT2s on them.

Tried to get the wheels to spin in the snow, but too much bloody grip and just set off like a....er Hippo!!!!

I ordered a set of Pirelli Scorpion STRs but they didn't arrive so I opted for a set of Hankooks (Dynapro HP) that were in stock at half the price of the Pirellis. They appear decent so far.

@ Balltligboy.
Logan's hardware in cloughmills has a tyre shop. Henry who runs it is amazing on tyres. i got 2 Lasa competus 4x4 tyres off him for my freelander last winter cause i needed them in a hurry, Henry highly recommend them they were very good price. i just ordered two more so i'll have a full set. i think they are excellent and served me very well both through last winter and the mucky summer. check him out for a price.

I've had Avon Ranger AT's and this year Pirelli Scorpions AT's - I live in LOTS of snow during the winter (30cms just now) and both brands have performed very well in extreme snow. Snow tyres are even better for ICE but are very expensive in comparison - with prudent driving and AT's you should be able to get through any snow conditions.

Hope this helps.

I'm up beside Slemish near Ballymena, its not too bad just 1cm of snow with a sheet of ice below it. Not as bad as it was last December... yet!

That's the problem, if there is no grip, no rubber will help, it has to be chains or studs.
