When key is moved to first position, light normally extinguishes after a few seconds depending on the temperature. Low temperature longer delay. When light extinguished, key moved to next position to turn the starter motor over and the car starts.

Car has developed fault whereby when first position is selected, chattering sound....(not an engine noise more like relay pulling in/dropping out) is heard from under the bonnet. If instead key is moved directly to the start position the starter motor turns over and the car starts. Weather is mild just now, don't think the engine would start if the weather is colder.

Car has done 68,000 miles no starting problems other than fuel pump since bought new in 2002.

Any suggestions

Sorry to sound dumb but can you explain again a bit more clearly.

Am I right in saying that you are saying you have a problem with your glow plugs?

First off the glow plugs operate on the second switch position and not the first. Secondly the starter switch is operated on the third position and not the second.

Does the glow plug light still come on when this chattering noise is happening?

If not it sounds like the chattering could be due to a faulty glow plug relay.
