Hay all

This has been doing my head in!
I have a 54 Freelander TD4.

About two months ago i started getting an electrical surge at 70MPH that kills the speed and sends all the dials haywire.

It starts with the battery warning light flickering then all the dials die and i loose power.

Its 50 MPH going up hill.

the warning light (engine) is constantly on so I took it to the mechanic and the diagnostics said it was a fault with the transmission?

the surge is now so bad that it blew the lights on the motorway last night and was very dangerous!

It is fine on none motorway stuff.

im planning on going to france in it in a few weeks so any help would be great.

Does sound like a alternator problem best to check it asap put a multimeter on the battery see what voltage your getting when reving!
 
Try wiring a long pair of multi meter leads into the cabin and keep your eye on the voltage when this happens. my guess is that the bridge rectifier on the alternator is calling its sibling. That or maybe try to visual check the rectifier maybe it looks on the way to blown. but being a td4 that would be an ass job
