hi I have a diesel Freelander and whilst travelling at 70 mph on the motorway it just died. No power at all. Was unable to move to the hard shoulder. There was a smell that smelt apparently according to the Highway Chappie like the clutch. Up to the car stopping. I had no warning signs, everything run as normal.

The Landrover garage have checked - the clutch, fuel pump, injectors, starter motor, timing and are currently checking the compression. So far no luck. The car is still dead.

Has anyone any suggestions ?
 
Hi. Thank you for replying. I didn't run out of fuel and I know that my fuel light didn't come on. The garage have checked the fuel pump and that's ok. I had a fuel pump replaced a couple of years ago and also 2 fuel injectors. There was dash board lights.
Interestingly my dad has reminded me that a reversed into a telegraph pole a couple of months a go and I replaced the back light. I am wondering if it's electric related, but surely the garage would have checked this first wouldn't they ? I'm going. To ring them when the open this am.

Have these Freelanders got the cut out switch for the fuel for when they get hit, seem to remember seeing something on here about it before.
Just a thought.
 
Hi. Unfortunately, it would appear that a crank shaft breather filter may not have been replaced at my last service. Compression cambers 1 and 2 are not firing. Quoted £5k to replace engine. Decided to scrap car. Far too expensive. I just need to find someone to take the car who might want to salvage the parts or replace the engine. Any ideas. The car is in Wakefield.

Sorry, but I think that's bulls**t.

These engines are pretty robust, get a second opinion!
It would have to have oil starved to get a massive loss of compression and there'd be a lot of things giving you a warning sign first - the oil can light would pop up on the dash for a start.

yes .. and it's got a big red button .. that when pressed .. resets the switch
i think it's on the passenger side near the bulkhead

that would Not stop the engine dead in it's tracks

Compression cambers 1 and 2 are not firing
cylinders 1 and 2 not firing ? .. either compression has gone .. or the injectors are'nt injecting
lack of compression in a 2006 td4 that's been serviced regularly .. not impossible .. but very unlikely
injectors not functioning ? .. could easily be the wiring connection to said injectors ..
( unless of course they have gone fubar internally )

apart from that fuel collision-fuel-cut-of-switch triggering by accident
or .. the high pressure pump .. or low pressure system failing completely ..
or a massive failure in an injector or two ..
the only other thing i could think of would be the *crankshaft sensor failing totally*
( *that's according to that m47r engine pdf file .. .. the 'tuning-diesels website info disagrees somewhat )
i.e. to stop the engine dead

that's apart from any catastrophic internal mechanical failure .. ..

comes across as a bit too much somehow ..
( and probably unnecessary to replace the whole engine )

Farnell Land Rover in Bradford are pretty good .. expensive .. but honest ..
and their technical knowledge is excellent .. as is their service as a whole ..
