I have a 1997, 1.8 Freelander petrol. I have just reconditioned the engine after head gasket trouble. It is now struggling to start and then chugs and nearly stalls when the revs fall. It was a non runner when I bought it. I have to disconnect the injector electrics to get it started. It smells strongly of fuel so I suspect it is overfuelling and running rich. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks for getting back to me. Itruns ok with revs and I think it's running on all 4. Having to disconnect fuel electrics to start it, points me to overfuelling. just not sure what's causing it.

Yep. It goes like this:
I try to start it and it won't
I disconnect the injectirs.
It starts on the fuel that has been put in from the first try.
I plug the wires back on and it starts.

That is why I'm convinced it's over fueling. Might be a lamda sensor problem but I'm not sure.

Hi jpmase. . . sounds like a fuel shut off on yer injector side [high pressure ] is sticking or stuck ,so on shut off petrol keeps filling the cylinders and floods it,so by your dissconection ,your in fact shutting the fuel and giving it a chance, maybe L R guy about he's the kiddy who can help ya , however thats a good place to look, best oh luck, , ,:)

In veiw of the fact you have just rebuilt you motor,I would be more inclined to check the crank shaft sensor and the cam sensor, make sure the connections are clean and secure as if either of these are duff the ecm wont be able to sence the correct time to inject fuel but due to the nature of modern day gadgetry the only sure way is to have it put on testbook and diagnose it properly
sorry this aint much help mate
Like Ming says LR GUY or the new chap clutchdust might be able to point yer in the right area
good luck!
