Freelander Revs uncontrollably!

Hi,

I have a Freelander 1.8 XEi. It has started to increase revs on it's own when i'm stationary for no apparent reason. I can be ideling at traffic lights and the revs suddendly shoot up to around 3000 without my foot being anywhere near the throttle. Is this a common/major fault or can it be easily rectified? Any advice would be appreciated.

sounds like your potentiometer has gone, i had the same happen to a nova gte years back when they were still quite new cars.
replacement is the only fix that i know of, and they were not cheap when mine went

Thanks for that. a colleague has just suggested the TPi. Is that the same thing?

Not sure if this will work but, Try to reset the sensor by switching engine off, then turn key to position II, until ignition light is on. Fully depress the accelerator 5 times in succession and then switch the ignition off again.

Any good garage with diagnostic fault code reader will narrow down the problem.

Cleaning the air temp sensor around the Throttle body might help. Could also be throttle body sticking. Plastic ones warp over time, new aluminium ones available from after market shops

Could also be an induction pipe split, it causes the car to suck air in after the MAF sensor and the car ECU just adds more fuel and up your revs go.

Fuel injected cars of a certain age nearly always have a split hose that can cause a similair problem to yours.

yup your throttle body is sticking, if it is black in colour and made of plastic then renew it with the modified metal one , then u will return to hassle free motorin , until ur next fault anyway
