My friend’s rear window cable has frayed on his Freelander, this has rendered the rear window u/s we have managed to close the door, raise the window and remove the fuse so at least the window is safe and water tight.

How difficult is it to replace the cable and or how much needs to be replaced, also an idea of time or cost will be useful,

An afternoon will do it, tricky enough but it will save you a fortune especially if you fabricate a new cable from a bike brake cable. Rest of pulley system will be fine, doesnt normally need replaced.

There are two cables per runner, two runners on each window.

You need to lower window so you can undo clamps. Mark position of clamps with a marker before removing window.

Undo bolts holding runners in place, cables have a few hidden clips in the door to keep them tidy.

Fold runners sideways to remove them.

Some self tappers holding regulator together, open carefully to access spindle, there are two cables wrapped around spindle in opposite directions.

Thanks lr1796, pjs917 is referring to my rear window, although more expensive the cable option seems tricky so I think i will opt for a complete new regulator. Many thanks for the help though - proved very useful indeed!

The rear windy is the same principle, two clamps, two runners, in fact its easier cos there is more space between the door skins.

Wish I had a camera at hand when I did the repairs, the pics would show how easy it is... well relatively easy.
 
I did my tailgate regulator last Thursday. I did read the bike brake cable fixes etc but ended up getting a complete new reg for £88 delivered off t`internet, did it all start to finish in 1 hour 5 mins (yes I did time myself - sad git) with help from Haynes & I`m no mechanic. :D
 
The brake cable option is the only option i would take. I have done it on her drivers door window, yes it was fiddly but so rewarding knowing it cost less than £2 to fix.

Its one of them jobs that when you have done it once it gets easier as you know what to expect and how to get round the niggly bits.

So much so a neighbours car is suffering the same issue, i have told him £25 a window and i will sort it.

Good man! Will you be fixing the neighbours soon..... was thinking about pics, always the option of me stripping the regulator down again just to get some photos, but if someone else is doing the mod then it will save me the hassle
