i have a slight problem with my freelander1.8 petrol the temperature gauge fluctuates between normal and red even when car has only been driven a few yards from cold .also the expansion tank empties but when the cap on the tank is opened the tank fills back up with water.can anyone enlighten me to what the problem could be the head gasket was changed about 6 months ago.

Is your car actually overheating? or just temp gauge reading showing hot? If the temp switch is earthed it will cause the gauge to go to red. If your car is overheating, Could be an air bloke in your cooling system.

1.8 engines are a pig to get the air out of the cooling system, I think you will find a small plastic hand screw on the top of the heater hose under the bonnet at back of engine. try venting athe air out of it, and topping up the expansion bottle. It may take a few goes, do it with the engine running but NOT hot.

Air lock and possibly blocked jiggle valve. If you repeatedly squeeze the top rad hose when cold you will hear the sound of a ball bearing rattling about, thats a working jiggle valve

Its easy to bleed the 1.8, only two bleed valves, the rad has its own bleed pipe feeding back into the expansion bottle
