Hi, I have just purchased a 1999 freelander 50th anniversary model which I am very happy with but can any one tell me how to turn the mirrors in when parking overnight to stop them being damaged. There is an electrical mirror adjuster in the car but this only alters the internal glass. I did try pushing the mirror housing into the body work but this seemed very hard and I did not want to damage it. I look forwar to your help.
Thanks,
Dick.

They changed the mirror design in 2000 to allow the mirror to fold in snug to the body work. They also introduced the powerfold that Mondo is talking about. You won't have that. Have a look at some later Freelanders, Y-reg on, and you will see what I mean.

Before that they had a really bad design. They don't fold in easily. If you keep the inards well greased (don't use oil, it will fly off and cover your windows) you can persuade them to give if they are hit by another car. Still not very foldy, though.

The best solution is to replace them with a set of mirrors from a later model - in fact, that's what I've got planned for tomorrow!

Hi, I have the same problem to the point that I have had to replace the covers twice as they keep getting knocked of overnight. They have just been done again!!

I take it from your post Blippie that the later model mirrors are compatible.

Is it a straight swap or are any modifications needed???

The post-2000 mirrors are compatible. You do need to drill a hole but it is an easy job and one that even a completely inexperienced DIY mechanic can do.

I would recommend getting hold of replacement mirrors off the internet and swapping them.
