Freelander losing power after 1-2 hours driving

Hello All,

I recently purchased my first Landrover Freelander 1.8 Xei Petrol in
England - Took it back to Ireland where I live.

It runs fine until I drive it for an hour or more, then it loses power when
you try to draw power from the engine. It will tick over, but it does not
want to rev or produce power. If I turn off the engine for 10 minutes, it
will run again for about 15-30 minutes but it really needs about 60 minutes
before it will run again properly for an hour.

I thought it might be the coil breaking down so I replaced the coil, rotor
and distributor cap but it is still happening.

I guess it could be any combination of sensors or even the ECU, but I do not
know where to start. A friend suggested the fuel pump, but I doubt the pumb
could run for so long and then give up the ghost. When the fault exhibits
itself, the car will still tick over, it just cannot make power / cannot
take a load on the engine, turning on the aircon highlights this further.

At no time does any warning lights come on, and when the car is running for
15 / 30 / 45 minutes, it runs perfectly, will do 80 - 90 no problem. It is
a 1999 1.8 petrol engine, temperature is always normal.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice you may have.

Mark

Have you tried removing the fuel cap when this happens, just in case
there's a vacuum in the fuel tank?

Hello Steve,

Yes, I have tried it with the fuel cap off for a number of miles but it made
no difference at all.

Still cannot make power until I leave it for 10 minutes or more.

Any other suggestions?

Mark

Possible malfunction of engine coolant temperature sensor. Or perhaps one
that works properly;-(

Huw

sounds like a problem i had some years ago where the fuel filter was
clogging up but when left for a while the fuel would relax the pressure on
the blocking particles and allow fuel through again until the blockage came
to the filter again it is normally filters either in line or by or on the
fuel pump that give the worse problems

I had a similar issue with my diesel Frontera when there was a blockage
in the fuel line. When it happened I'd have to remove the fuel line and
pump a couple of times with an attached foot pump to clear it

My guess is the catalyst might well be blocked.

Wonder if someone's put diesel in at some point...
