Hi there I have a 1999 freelander 2.0 diesel with the l series engine, the alternator has just cooked the battery, I’ve changed the fuses it blew and checked the relays, it now will start and run for a few seconds then stops, I’m not getting the glow plug light on the dash and can’t hear the electric fuel pump running on the side of the injection pump,
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks in advance

Welcome to LZ.

The L Series doesn't have an electric pump, the injection pump acts as the lift pump as well.

Not sure what you're problem is though. Have you actually changed the alternator?

I hope the ECU hasn't been fried.
 
The car hasn't imobilised itself by any chance? Is the alarm LED lit solid?

When my starter motor started to die it spiked electric through the system and confused the imobiliser. I disconnected the battery for 1/2 hour, reconnected and it resolved itself.

Doe all the other electrics work? eg windows (inc back door glass), interior lights, alarm. The engine ECU and CCU on a '99 need to be fully functional for the car to not imobilise itself.
 
Everything works apart from the glow plug symbol on the dash and the electric black thing on the side of the injector pump, I have a dona vehicle to use for parts, someone said if I take the ecu and the electric ring off the ignition barrel together and try it I won’t have to have it re coded?.
 
The 'ring' on the ignition barrel serves no purpose other than picking up a signal, the signals are decoded by the CCU, which I believe is on the back of the fuse box. You could swap this by itself to see if that has broken.

The CCU has valid transponder codes stored in it and will determine if the transponder is 'authorised' to start the car. The CCU exchanges codes with the engine's ECU, if they're OK the CCU will enable the starter motor and the engine ECU will enable fuel to be injected. I believe though that some of these signals don't necessarily get exchanged properly and it is possible that the engine will turn over, fire and then die when the ECU cuts fuelling. I'm not saying this is what's wrong with your car, but there's a decent chance of it being.

So, if you are to swap bits over, you need the matching engine ECU, CCU and fobs for the keys (on a L Series the transponder is in the fob). The CCU also controls the alarm so will have the fob codes stored as well. You can have other transponders/fobs coded to the CCU, but it needs diagnostic kit for Freelander with that functionality (ie not the cheap ones!) or as garage with the kit to do it.

How do you know that this electric black thing is not working? If its because it is making no noise, how do you know it is supposed to be making noise? Is it from your parts car?
