Freelander key fob question

Hi - we have an old Freelander 08 plate - the key fob doesn't open the dood but if it's inserted into the slot on the dashboard the engine will start - we're not sure therefore if this is a battery problem or not. Will the engine still start even if the fob battery is dead? Thank you

2008 isn't old. In fact it's a baby compared to most vehicles owned by forum members.

Does the other fob open the doors ok?

And yes, the fob will still start the car, even if the internal battery has failed.
The battery in the fob is charged while it's in the dock, but only if the buttons are uppermost.
