Problem -
GRAUNCH/SQUEAK FROM FRONT SUSPENSION
The noise may be heard when reversing off of a slope or kerb on full steering lock or when gently accelerating over speed humps.
Cause
A foul condition between the lower arm snubber washer and rear bush housing due to lack of clearance/misalignment.
Action
Where a customer complaint of noise from the front suspension is confirmed to originate from the above location, rectify as detailed below, carrying out the repair on both lower arms.
1. Inspect the lower arm rear bush housing A, at the roll pin location B (refer to illustration 1), to determine whether a roll pin is fitted. This can best be achieved by attempting to insert a 3mm diameter probe (eg: a twist drill shank) into the roll pin location from below.
1
2. If a roll pin is not fitted, it will be possible to insert the drill shank at least to the depth of the cast flange of the bush housing. If this is the case, it is only necessary to replace snubber washers C with new washer RDB100080. Do not tighten lower arm rear nut at this stage.
3. With the vehicle resting on its road wheels, tighten the lower arm rear nut to 140Nm. Confirm clearances as described in step 9.
4. If a roll pin is fitted, (drill shank cannot be inserted to full depth of flange), remove lower arm rear bush housing A and follow steps 5 to 9.
5. Still referring to illustration 1, remove and discard roll pin B from bush housing, (this is purely a manufacturing aid and serves no purpose once the vehicle is completed).
6. Refit bush housing replacing snubber washer C with new washer RDB100080. Do not tighten bolts or lower arm rear nut at this stage.
7. With vehicle resting on its road wheels, tighten the lower arm rear nut to 140 Nm.
8. With vehicle still resting on its road wheels, tighten the lower arm rear bush housing bolts to 105 Nm.
9. Confirm that gaps are present at A and B, (refer to Illustration 2). The nominal clearance dimension is 1.5 mm for both positions. The minimum acceptable clearance is 0.5 mm.
