I'm looking to get a freelander, but have heard some horror stories about any Freelanders that have a Range Rover engien. So i been told to only get one with a BMW engien. But i cant figure out which year the BMW engiens started being used on the Freelander. So if anyone could please let me know it would be a great help.
thank you

thank you for your reply, but after all the stories that i'v heard i would still rather get one with a bmw engien. but i'm still not sure what year to search for, as i'm on a bit of a budget too!

Hi Mate.. un :welcome:

If ya ask me.. dont get a gaylander! unless you can put up with...

Braking down!

Very expensive parts! (and i meanVERY)

Huge garage bills.. (read some of the stories here!)

Land rover stealers charging excessive labour un parts!

Fuel un service costs!

Doing without ya LR for weeks or months! (while its being repaired)

Oh, and i hope yer got a fat bank account, cos ya need it!

Yeah.. get a TD4 (BMW).. but dont think you'll be out of the woods
by any means!!:deadhorse:

Best o luck!!

TD4 seems to be OK - had worse problems with:-

Rear brakes binding (due to last dealer fitting shoes incorrectly...)
Steering rack leaking due to poor seals (no not the grey type...)
Engine undertray bolts being seized in solid (makes you wonder how they changed the oil.....)
Rear diff drive shaft seals weaping (like me at my bank balance)
Intercooler hose leaking

But apart from these problems i like driving it and its like anything look after it it will look after you, if something is going wrong fix it before it becomes a major breakdown and cost - if you're not sure ask in here for advice and be prepared to be laughed at!

Since I aquired mine I have fixed most of these 'leftover from the previous owner' faults and it has ran fine.
