The tratter will soon stop production. LR has produced a number of video's to celebrate the it's 67 year history. One of them shows a drawing in the sand at Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey which is in the top left of Wales. It was done in honour of the tratter and Morris Wilks who was the original designer. A fitting tribute which was quickly wiped out by salt water when the tide came in. LR's only record of the sand drawing is verbal so they don't have the actual picture. That got me thinking...
In 2006 the FL1 stopped production. Late last year in 2014 the FL2 stopped production. A sad end to 17 years of FL manufacturing. As a fitting tribute to Europe's best selling 4x4 I thought it would be a good idea to draw a Freelander in the sand at Red Wharf Bay. With some careful planning I think we could pull this oft (or fek it up).
I guess the first step is to see who would be interested in taking part, and what they could help with. Dates would be sorted out privately to stop the press turning up.
LR towed agricultural harrows behind tratters to mark the picture in the sand. I don't have one of these which is kind of a problem when yer need one. So a suitable alternative would need to be used/engineered. Something towable on a chain which creates a 10 foot wide mark in the sand would do. LR used a harrow about 15 foot wide, with each line of the picture drawn 6x harrow widths wide. That's quite big so we may have to aim our efforts at a smaller design. I was thinking of something 3D but that could be too difficult to get right.
Does anyone have one of those flying camera helicopters which flies using remote control? I would like this filmed to put on you tube. I can edit it and sort that out. Ideally we need 2 of these. One to hover high to film the whole picture being draw in the sand in one go, and a second to do some fancy Top Gear style fly by's during the picture drawing. Only problem I for see ere is the wind/rain and battery time. We will need to draw the picture quickly. Also have some camcorders capturing footage anorl. Using more than one FL would mean having to make/acquire multiple harrows.
When this goes on you tube it's going to go viral so we can't fek it up. Preparation is the key ere. We need to find out when the tide is in/out. How we drive on and oft the beach (if we're allowed that is). Who would we get permission from if we need it? How to plan the route of the picture - @ming could beam down an over lay from his rocket or alternatively we could mark it out prior to drawing using small flags. We need to get this right first time so a spotter on a cliff top may be the answer.
