I'm new to 4wd and pulling a boat in reverse on the beach the front wheels started to bog down but the rear wheels looked like they had no power going to them .the prop is all still in place. I did press the hill descent button and this was activated whilst on the beach, I now know what this button does could that have caused my problem

The HDC stands for Hill Decent Control. It's only active when going down hill forwards, with the gear selector in 1 or going down hill backwards, with the gear selector in R. The HDC system is in standby, while in any of other gear, which signified by the HDC light flashing.

No drive to the rear wheels will be the VCU (unlikely) or the IRD, more likely.

Jack one back wheel up and see if it turns.

You should only just be able to turn it very slowly with a lot of effort as the VCU slips.

If it turns easily and only the rear section of the prop shaft turns, the VCU is 'open' and won't transfer drive - as said, unlikely.

It if turns easily and both sections of the prop shaft turns, then the PTO out of the IRD has been disabled - like mine!

If you do get resistence but you are still thinking it was not giving drive to the rear wheels, do a 1 wheel up test, if you get a really quick time - eg 5 seconds, it could be that someone has rebuilt the VCU with low viscocity fluid.

Test shown here...
