Hi All, thinking of trading in my Freelander 1 for a 2 model - mine is the dreaded 1.8K series petrol with the hg problem sorted 45000mls ago - what's the one to go for ?

Get a diesel unless you have access to ridiculously cheap petrol. The autos are better off road; the manual has better consumption and a nice box, but a few people have had clutch and flywheel problems. What to get depends on the age - on earlier ones the basic model is just that - no cruise control or terrain response. HSE and above keep their second hand value better. All in all a very different and much better car than the FR1 (I've had both). Try to check it's had all the software updates and recalls - should have if it's been dealer serviced.

gs is reasonable spec, xs is better, heated seats and part leather, worries me all the gadgets in the hse to go wrong.
Yes, mine's a GS. Only extra I'd like is a satnav. Many people seem to think the heated screen and heated washer jets are a must. If you want bluetooth phone you'll need the higher spec radio as well. Whichever model you get, make sure it has a jack and a spare wheel (preferably alloy). Other wise you'll have to go on e-bay for a wheel (although the jack is apparently very cheap from the dealer - comes with a Volvo sticker).
