Hi All

I’ve had my 10 plate Freelander 2 sport for 10 years. Never caused me any problems until now.

I have a bearing like noise that has gotten worse, still drives perfectly. Brother in law who knows a bit about cars believes it to be the gearbox thread bearing which apparently is a big job and too costly for a 14 year old car.

Appreciate it’s a how long is a piece of string question but ball park what would be the cheapest fix, new gearbox or repair?l need a car for work so need to have a plan going forward so some rough ideas would help.

I'd say find out what it is first.
Rear diff can cause issues and is a common failure point.
Bell Engineering are knowledgeable and it may be worth a chat or drive over there.

The rear diff and PTU are common failure points, the gearbox less common, and normal just suffers a weak synchro in 3rd gear.

A FL2 still has good value, even at 14 years old, so it's normally worth fixing. As suggested, Bell Engineering are the gurus for the drive train components, where they both sell parts main order or fit parts if needed.
