Hi guys I'm pretty sure this have been mentioned before but here goes my freelander 2 has started to loose coolant I have pressure tested the coolant system and traced it back to the egr, can't tell where abouts until I can get it up and have a good look, can I bypass this or remove it all together and map it out? Will this affect performance at all? Also there is small amount of oil in the coolant which has being slowing getting worse since I've had it, can I bypass this as well or should I just get a new egr and cooler and new oil cooler? Freelander 2 sd4 2011 automatic 160k . I plan to the work soon so any help would be appreciated, thank you

Sorry I dont think I was clear it what a wrote, yes the coolant leak is definitely coming from the egr. The oil in the coolant is not alot and has being happening for quite some time now, no coolant in oil but oil in coolant, black oil stuck to the side of the coolant bottle, I mean it could hg I suppose? My money is on the oil cooler though so I would like to eliminate that first and see. Could I blank both of these off ?

Oil cooler can leak internaly and let oil go in the coolant, more common cause than Head Gasket.
You can't rely fix an engine that had once a Head Gasket faillure.

Oil is used to lubricate the moving parts and also cool the engine.
The oil goes throught very hot parts like the Turbo, If the oil is no more cooled, your engine will certainly overheat ...
Thanks for the reply, so new oil cooler needed, what about the egr? I have read of people blanking them off and connecting the cooling hoses together so bypassing the egr completely, can this be done and will it affect performance? Or should I buy a new egr and cooler aswell ? Thanks

Hi,
If your EGR is leaking coolant, so blanking it will probably be useless. Better to replace it.
For the Oil Cooler is better to know that is leaking before replacing it. Check your oil.
Better to do a compression test first, to be sure that you have no Head Gasket issue.
If you the Oil cooler is leaking, you can easily end with a blown Head Gasket.

Thanks for the replys, I'm going to start with the egr, so after getting under it this morning I have found where the leak is, its the plastic part where the hose connects on the cooler, can this be replaced without removing from the car? Also is there a part number for this or no anywhere in the UK where I could get it? Thanks

I disagree, a head gasket can be replaced, same as any other engine, just make sure a genuine HG and bolts are used.
As above, the oil cooler can't be linked out, as the engine needs it for cooling.
The EGR cooler can technically be linked out, but only if the EGR valve is blanked. Be aware that tampering with the EGR system will fail the UK mot, if the tester spots it. It won't normally effect performance, but can reduce the fuel efficiency slightly, as the ECM isn't calibrated to run without the EGR functioning correctly.

Thanks I think I'm going to try find the part and hopefully I don't have to take the egr off to replace it, although it's probably due a clean, if this fails I may look into blanking it. Don't suppose you no the part number for the said part do you? The one circled in blue on my above post? Thanks
