Greetings, I have just aquired a Freelander 2 early 2011 vintage with 2 keys. One key looks newish and works fine. The other key is dead, it looks well used, the buttons have no effect although the manual insert key will open the passenger door. The dead key will not hold into the ignition socket. I believe that if the key will not hold into the ignition socket it cannot be charged and has a programming or circuit board error. Any techies out there know the answer?

hello Captain. i have had my Freelander 2 for 5 years and i have experienced a similar thing which i suspect is battery failure and if you need to replace it try this you-tube article: https://uk.ask.com/youtube?q=New+battery+for+land+rover+electrionic+key&v=fF96evFrrPc . i enquired with the main dealer nand it will cost about £220 for an new key (they keep them in stock) which includes half an hours labour for programming (my word) it into the car. i cannot see that it is a complicated job to programme i but don't know how to do it. good luck but i guess i will pay the extortionate £220!

Did your dead key allow you to start the Freelander??? I don't suppose the police would think to change a battery but I had seen that link earlier. I will ask Landrover if a dead key will start a vehicle.

yes, my dead key will start the vehicle. i have just found a repair service for these on ebay and have placed an order £18.88 if i remember rightly.

I used this service to get the battery changed but the key is still dead, no button functions and no ignition, will not hold in. I guess it needs reprogramming.

I was told by a Landrover specialist that the dead ( second key ) won't start the engine. It's a sort of ' valeters key ' . But not sure . Mine will open the doors and boot but not start the engine !

I also have a faulty second key, the key works fine in the ignition slot and runs the engine without ant problems but as a remote none of the keys work, can these be programmed separately?

Ive read a few posts and some YouTube videos which state that these keys can only be programmed once but you can buy blank electronic inserts for the old keys on eBay quite cheaply and have them reprogrammed, you can also buy new key cases which are very easy to fit using the old PCB and key blade from your old key.

It's probably the battery, which is a known issue for them.
The fob will still start the engine, even if the battery is dead.
