I have an 01 Freelander V6 ES 2.5 Automatic, and it has done 50k miles and has been regularly serviced, most recently 4000miles ago.

A couple of days ago I noticed after a trip to some mountains (on road)
that when I start it from cold, and for about the first 15 minutes of
driving, each gearchange up or down is accompanied by a clunk and a
severe jerking. The problems seems to alleviate after continual
driving, and after about an hour, the gear changes are as smooth as can
be.

It seems quite temperamental, and on some days the problem is not evident.

It exhibits no strange behaviour either when reversing or on full lock.

I've managed to drive it now for several weeks, and I'm worried that this could be a major repair...
Any help appreciated.

You asked for things to look out for......
VIS valves in inlet manifold rattling
Heater matrix leaking (complete dash dismantle to get to)
Thermostat housing leaking (difficult to get to)
centre prop shaft bearings
VCU
IRD
gearbox electronics (HDC funnies)
Cracked chassis

this should keep you busy for an hour or 2 :>

(to music..."These are a few of my favourite things!!")

Simplecheck - remove rear section of prop and see if noise goes away. If it does, that will narrow it down to only expensive items and not re-mortgage ones.

I had the same problem but only happen from 3rd to 4th gear and when the engine still cold. so when it is still cold I use steptronic and change the gear manually after i let go the gas pedal just like when you driving manual car. it has been like that for a year now.
hope you can find out whats wrong with yours and let me know :D

ee it must be catching... the old 'mine does that' has spread down from the rangie bit. maybe grunt unknowningly brought it out last night. can we set up a quarrantine point here to stop it spreading to the discos and further?

yup - steptronic box is known fur doing that - and not many peeps overhaul them either. I was quoted £1800 - but that includes an extra cooler - coz they run hot.
