Freelander 2 2007 won't start

So used it in the morning no problems came home then couple hours later would not start. AA said solenoid on starter motor. But it's not my mechanic has said not fuse not relay not starter motor not battery. Put key in dash depress clutch clicking in dashboard and under passenger seat. My mechanic can turn over starter motor when connects directly. He does not have a wiring loom chart. I cannot afford landrover garage as wedding florist so no work at the moment ! He says there is no start trigger to the starter motor. Has anyone any ideas please. Oh and we used a different key and that makes no difference. I am in Surrey.
