I"m still looking for a replacement for my 2003 Serengeti and on Autotrader there is a 2009 Freelander 2 for sale at £2950. It"s advertised as a 2009 Freelander 2.2 TD4 HSE Automatic Euro with Switchable 4x4. It also states it needs a new Cam Belt?
My questions are; Is the 2009 Freelander 2 a TD4? Does it have Switchable 4x4 and does it have a Cam Belt and not a Chain. One other problem, he has recently had two new all weather tyres fitted to the rear! and he states the fronts will need changing at the next MOT in August 2023.
Should I stay clear???

Needs a new cam belt !! Has old one broken and destroyed engine or is it just over scheduled replacement time.
2009 is a Freelander 2.
They have cam belts.

Yes it has belts, about £250 gates kit, easy to do, do water pump at the same time, nowt wrong with two new tyres as long as they are the same make, even if they are not you could buy the other two, check the MOT out, should AWD when he says switchable he could means, snow mode all terrain, etc with 6 owners, one key not really working properly, driver window not working properly, parking sensors not working as they should, i would air on the cautious side, sounds like it's been abused to me, and you could be buying someone trouble, with 188,000 miles. I have just looked at the 3 pages there are some right nails on there.

Hi Artic 2, I agree mate. I reckon I should keep my old motor at least nearly everything works on it.
I"ve had my Freelander for over 6 years and it was cheap, and I mean cheap but touch wood it has never really let me down and only a month ago we did a 500 mile round trip with no problem at all except when we got back home we discovered we had been locked out!!!!.

That FL2 is far too expensive for something that needs so much work.

I paid £2000 for my SE with an engine that needed repairing.
However body on mine was in perfect condition, as was the interior, the only issue there was the rear PDC had a faulty sensor.

I did have to replace the rear diff which was beyond repair, and service the Haldex and replaced all the brakes and a single tyre on top of the engine repair, but for under £3200 all in, I now have a nice FL2 with under 130k miles to drive around in.
Ok it's got a couple of issues, once being a coolant loss, and the other a loss of power when the fuel gauge goes under ¼ tank, but both these issues are fixable when time allows.

It also states it needs a new Cam Belt?

Yes it's called a TD4, but that's where the similarities to the FL1 TD4 ends.
The FL2 is a completely different vehicle, which shares no parts with the FL1, except for the bag hooks in the luggage area.

The engine is from PSA and is much more advanced than the BMW boat anchor fitted to the FL1.
There is a timing belt, but it's not especially difficult to replace, and has a 10 year or a 150k mile interval.
Due to this very long life it's best to replace the idler pulley, tensioner and coolant pump while the belt is removed.
It makes sense to replace the drive belt too, as a 180 Amp alternator takes considerable power from the crankshaft.
There is also a timing chain, but it's not a service item and seldom needs replacing.

The AWD system is an active on demand system and as such is fully automatic in operation.
There is a 4 position dial which can be used to fine tune the system which LR call Terrain Response. However leaving it in normal is pretty much what most owners do, and doing so will get the job done.
I happen to like SAND mode, as it makes the throttle response much more crisp, and locks the on demand coupling more rapidly, making driving quite fun.

Otherwise it's a more advanced LR compared to the FL1, being faster, stronger, more comfortable, much more quiet, better handling, better braking, more relaxed place to spend a journey.
When I first got mine I wasn't sure, but after 3 years with it, there's no way I could go back to a FL1, even if the FL2 does throw the odd curve ball.

More words of Wisdom from the ORACLE!!!! Thank you Nodge 68 you really have changed my opinion on this matter and No I will not be considering buying that particular FL2 . I will wait and save some more of my pocket money and buy a better one.
Cheers to all that replied.
