Freelander 18k what engines fit?

I have just got me a freelander, who knows why? but thats what ive done, now I want to know if there is an alternative engine that will fit it without a lot of peaing around, I would like a desiel, would a montego desiel fit? or something cheap and cheerfull?

I know we occasionally get some weird posts on here but you take the biscuit.
Why didn't you just buy a diesel Montego estate and ask how to convert it to four wheel drive? :p
Or why didn't you buy a diesel Gaylander to start off with you pilchard. :D
 
Hi, interesting project. Unfortunately I don't know myself what'll fit, but I was told in a previous thread that the Freelander L-Series diesel was a developement of the perkins prima fitted to the Montego. I also remember about two years ago seeing a Range Rover on ebay fitted with the Montego diesel & I know they were a popular swap for the old series Landrovers a few years ago. Don't give up till you've exhausted all sources of info & good luck with the swap. Hopefully you'll get some good advice from the real people on here & not just the losers posting their dross - let us know how it goes.

As a 'LOSER' - I shall post more dross :D :

As a senior member, Chromiumuk should be more than aware that Landyzone is a FUN as well as useful and informative forum - most members on here realise that (at times) you post at your peril :rolleyes:

I personally would not have gone down the route that galig is looking at, as diesel Freelanders are in relatively plentiful supply perhaps the best option would have been to go for a diesel version in the first place.


Now, should a Perkins Prima engine fit? That will depend on a whole load of other variables, such as;

Will the engine fit the gearbox or will an adaptor plate need to be fabricated?
What clutch will need to be fitted to match the input shaft of the gearbox?
The engine mounts are likely to be in a different place, so replacements will have to be sourced and fitted to the bodyshell - remember a Freelander is a monocoque body i.e. no separate chassis so it is not simply a case of moving the mount abit and rewelding it in place.
The exhaust system will most likely need to be modified to align up with the replacement engine - will the exhaust manifold even be on the same side of the engine as the original??
There are various ECUs and complex electrics on a modern car - will the replacement engine upset any of these?
etc, etc, etc.

You have an awful lot to learn about the spirit of Landyzone my friend.
Help can be offered in abundance (as could an awful lot of **** take too).
There is also the opportunity to meet other Landyzone members and some good friendships have been struck up through the forum.
I'm sure that if Landyzone does not meet your expectations you could go and join another forum and ask them the same question.
They might be more helpful, on the other hand they could be a damned sight more abusive.
Rule number one for Landyzone; Think carefully before posting.
Rule two; Don't take anything to heart.
Rule three; If you don't like what you see, LEAVE!!
