Loads of people have them fitted, especially if running larger tyres. I myself only just got some 38mm spacers front and rear and fitted them the other day. Got before and after pics :D

Not sure where I said wider deeper offset wheels.

No you didn't, that is why i asked the question. That would be the only reason you would fit wheel spacers, that is what they are for. Fit them on standard wheels and the steering geometry will be out. Or did you not know that?

Perhaps he missed the comma after the word "Why" which would then change the meaning from a probing question to a direct one.........

Fitting spacers increases the track width adding for more clearance or in my own case... getting rid of a SIGNIFICANT amount of body roll when cornering. The freelander drives a lot nicer with a 38mm spacer fitted to the standard wheels and as it's no race car, i don't think worrying about scrub radius is really an issue compared to better riding comfort, and a much less wimpy look. In fact, i reckon the tighter turning circle is a beneficial change to the steering geometry. Unless i've missed something extra about spacers that's really bad?

Spacers cannot increase the wheel base. But they do widen the track. You have been told whats bad you just don't understand why.
