hi all, new to the forum and my first cry for help so hoping your expertise can help..03 plate old facelift 1..88k
got back from a 80m round trip monday and for the last 20m when idling or pulling away a bit of a rattle from drivers side low down, pull off and alls good drives well very quiet ..till idle, now it was left over night and started
fine very quiet untill it did about 15m then the noise again, according to service history it had vcu done at 65k and carriers and a new crank pulley june 2014, and its a freelander genuine , so any ideas would be appreciated please, i have a fair bit of mechanical knowledge but non on land rovers..cheers in hope.

just spent an hr under the car and all heatshield and body floor pan solid, started up.now its cold its quiet..any ideas please

Exhaust internals ?
thanks for reply...now is that some think that would only show when hot..makes sense in that what ever prob is ..is effected by heat...or at least when its been running 20m ..my first worry is ird box..or drive shaft but then its had new vcu and would that not show straight away..cheers

There are lots of bits to get loose with the expansion with heat .... have known people to put a long self tapping screw into the cat to stop it 'tinking' ...
give it a tap with a soft faced hammer and see if the noise repeats ...

while under the car i notice the cat is at position almost under the gear lever tunnel ..but right by the bulk head..ill have run it hot then get under , thanks for the idea

Anything silly that can tap on the chassis rails, sound travels along stuff like that ...
Brake backing plates, a stone stuck in something ...

big worry is ...dreaded ird or drive shaft probs, but that would be constant i presume..thanks for the ideas ..all helps im home wens so ill have a look..cheers

The TD4 suffers from pulley damper delamination. This causes a metallic sound at low Rpm. Look for silver fairy dust around the bottom pulley.

hi...according to the service history the pulley was replaced june 2014 with original one, seems few td4s got rattles lol...its finding them eh..cheers

Worth checking anti roll bar bushes on the sub frame. Mine knocked every now and then. Look for fouling marks at either end too, mine was knocking against suspension. Worth a check, it starts as an intermittent thing then gets worse over weeks.

Its possible that its just taking that long to slip over to one side, mine would be fine, then after a couple of tighter corners it would knock, and by the time i stopped it would have settled down again. Your symptoms are exact to mine. Check on the inside edges of the bushes, the should be a chunky looking washer that stops slip each way, mine corroded off. Wtf...

thats a great help mate thanks ...another mind eh..and some one whos experienced the fault...ill get in on ramps sun ...cheers

Just my 2 bobs worth mate, might be totally off track, if it turns out to be this, fear not! Ita a cheap fix, couple of hours and you should be good. Let us know how u get on, always good to hear the end results.
