Freelander 1 Freelander 1 starts at low rpm then turns off?

Hello, recently Ive had moments where I have started my Freelander 1 td4, 2006 diesel automatic, and it starts no problem but it starts at lower rpm than usual, around 3-400rpm then it turns off. Then it happens continously for a few cycles but i eventually manage to start the car with around 900rpm idle.

Anyone have a clue what this might be? I searched a bit around and couldnt find similar thread on starting it and it turns off right after.

Hi,

The issue, is that can be a fueling issue, from the fuels pumps to the injectors.

You have instable rpm, I will suspect the HP fuel pump first, check if there is no leak.

Fuel injectors can be tested, leak back test can spot wrong ones.

Idle should be around 780 rpm.

Also you should read the code, to see if there no stored fault code.

Thanks will check, is it serious? Or is it fine if i drive on the high way for example and it wont just turn off(the car)?

The engine will certainly not cut off, with a fueling issue. But you can end with a reduced power with no warning.

No diesel smell ? If so can be a leak, and diesel can burn.

Check the HPFP regulator, the O-rings can split and leak, the fix is about 45minutes and the cost of the parts are £5.22.

starter motor need to be removed to gain good access, it can be done without removing the starter but is much harder, removing the starter also gives you chance to check the contacts and plunger of the starter and re-new those at the same time tow birds with one stone.
