Freelander 1.8 Petrol starting problem

I'm running a 12 yr old freelander 1.8 petrol.
Struggled to start this afternoon and once at destination failed to restart.
Symptoms:
- turns over but fails to start, battery strong
- after 4-5 attempts with foot on floor of accelerator it started briefly but as I put into gear to move it died again. Tried again started for a sec then died.

Any ideas before I call AA tomorrow as like to have an idea before getting told it is something that it might not be.

Recent symptoms may/may not be connected are that in traffic tachometer sometimes goes sky high and only comes down with a pump of the accelerator.

is there a spark at the plugs?

Mine done this when I first bought it. Traced to a MAP sensor issue, which is inside the ECU...
