Just trying to do the swival ball on a series 2A but I am a little stumped on the freewheel hub.

Do I need to remove the hub cap which is the on off for the hubs if so how do I go about removing it?

Thanks

James

Thanks, I think I will just break it that way. There is movement there just not enough to get it off. there seems to be something you have to do to remove it rather than just force.

just found some info, should help me, I will give it a try.

Here it is for any one else who is haveing the same isues.

Fairey Freewheel Hubs

If you've got a very large hub on your front axles, then you've probably got freewheel hubs. The idea behind these is that, if you're in 2-wheel drive, then there's no point your front wheels turning all that machinery in the axles. This just wastes energy and fuel! So, this bit of kit allows you to selectively disconnect the front wheels from the drive shafts.

After cleaning the hubs (what do you mean, you never get your Landie mucky?), you should be able to make out the simple instructions. Turn one way for 2x4 & the other for 4x4. Select 2x4 when in 2-wheel drive and you'll save fuel & reduce noise. When running in 4-wheel drive, you need to select 4x4, or you won't actually get the benefit!

One thing that confused me for a while was, how do you remove the hub? The bearings of one of my wheels were getting loose & I needed to remove the hubs to get to them. What I eventually found out was :-

Remove the small screw on the side of the freewheel hub.
Gently prise up the plastic that's underneath the screw (it looks like a recessed washer, but it's actually the end of a strip that wraps around the inside of the hub) and slowly pull the strip out - remember which direction it goes, for later!
Once the strip is removed, you should be able to pull the hub off - look out for the rubber washer that's inside and take care that the spring doesn't get free.
I need to put more details here, but that's the hardest bit over with!
To replace the hub, check the washer's in place & push the hub back on.
You should now be able to push the plastic strip back in - if there's a lot of resistance, you may need to remove the hub and try again.
After seating the end of the strip, fasten in the screw & you're done.

I looked and looked and looked and still cant work it out. There seems to be nothing in the hole to pull out at all, just a grove the screw sits in with 2 sides and a bottom.

Any better sugestions?
