FRC8751 Gear Change Cross Shaft Housing

Hello,
I am hoping someone could help explain why are there two variations of this part FRC8751 - Gear Change Cross Shaft Housing, my old one has two holes on the side, where as the new one I purchased does not have any holes?!?

on early housings they used a spring,same as the ones used in series g/boxc 3rd 4th synchro hubs rtc1956),no14 in pic
