ford explorer rattles

my 92 explorer rattles when accelerating until it reaches higher rpm
and is especially bad when going uphill. any suggestions on what could
be causing this.

If you mean it pings, not an internal knock, the egr system is almost
certainly the problem, if the timing is correct. Inop valve or blocked egr
passages.
