Neighbours 70k, served every 6k Exploder is currently sat at the local
dealers having the engine removed and stripped due to (they think) a failed
tensioner between banks causing massive not good sounding rattlings.

Apparently the front chain gear is ok, but they'll be stripping and
replacing the chain / guides / tensioners at the same time.

They've quoted near enough £1000 to do it, has anyone else experienced
similar problems with this common 4 litre V6?

Tim..

I believe that this problem is a 'known issue' and is fixed free of charge
in the good ol' USofA for engines that have done less than 100K miles.
If your neighbour fancies a DIY approach some of the kit needed is available
on eBay:

There was a brand new Exploder engine on eBay a couple of weeks ago for
about £650 (in the UK)

I thought that was a very short engine (Block, crankshaft and pistons)?

I might be thinking of the wrong one. There was a fairly complete engine on
eBay recently that somebody had bought to put in a kit car only to find it
didn't fit between the chassis rails or something.

Ah, OK. I don't think I saw that one, the short block is the only one I
can see currently on offer.

Here it is again. Didn't spot that it's a OHV lump, not the newer SOHC,
though.
