So I thought we'd crack on this morning (my 14 yr old son and I) and remove clutch & flywheel to change out the rear crank oil seal as I've got a nice shiny 300 tdi one from Turner Engineering waiting to go on. Once the flywheel was removed, we were met with just the lip seal that sits in the flywheel casing counterbore and seals around the crank, not the one that has it's own alloy housing and bolts up.

It's definitely a 300 tdi engine but has the LT77 box so I'm assuming that's why I've got what's in the pics.

Question is, is this old type of crank seal any good? (the existing one was leaking).
Can I / should I change the flywheel casing to suit the new design of crank oil seal and if I do, will it mate up to the LT77 box?

That sounds like a 200 tdi housing and likely is original to the LT77 I think it was a better design than the 300 type and less troublesome. The 200 type housing if removed for seal renewal has to have it's and the block's mating surfaces cleaned and a bead of sealant applied before refitting.

I think you're spot on there fella. I'm just concerned about the crank seal as it's the older design and clearly doesn't perform that well if a bead of silicone is needed between the casing.

Oh well, better stock up on plenty of silicone then!

The silicone has nowt to do with the crank seal.

The silicones to seal between the block and the flywheel housing,

The 300has a gasket , the 200tdi was a paper gasket iirc. Better using rtv though.

There are 2 types of 200tdi seal.

If you get a (dowty) green stripe metal with teflon seal one with the plastic fitting insert on it - iirc they are 20-30 quid then your good.

If its the (****part)black rubber one with no plastic fitting insert youll probably remove it and be fitting a green one a few weeks later
