Hello again, I
I've been feeling ill for 2 weeks with covid. I haven't started the car in that time and when I tried yesterday it wouldn't even turn over. I tried my spare battery with jump leads, still nothing! The spare battery is fully charged and I've got the car battery charging in situ. Would it be ok to charge the car battery and then try to jump start the engine using both batteries with jump leads? The way I'm feeling, this is the last thing I need, but sod's law says its got to happen.

What year is your P38?
Do you get any messages on the dash or lights as normal?

But yes I have never had any problems with charging battery on car:).

Do you have your EKA code?

May seem like lots of questions. I have had problems with flat battery on a 96 before and it needed the EKA to get going (long time ago before knowing P38 dummy spits:)). With both now when battery is flat I always put the key in position 2 before connecting jump battery. Most time on the 96 can sync everything with either key in door with the turn and push relevant button. Or in ignition and push button.
I have sort of put it down to the fact if the battery is flat and you open the car and bonnet, Then put power to it, it thinks its getting nicked:eek::D. Never fell into that trap again:)

So a bit more info needed really and yes agree its not what you need right now:(.

Diesel or petrol?
No harm jumping as long as you connect to the recommended points.
I can never remember, but some will not crank if the alarm is triggered, but there should be a message on the dash.

OK, not in my area of expertise then.

But didn’t they change the petrol to respond the same as the diesel in alarmed/immobilised state at some point.

If I remember my 96 petrol will not crank if it’s spat it’s dummy. But the later 1s had no fuel which I believe the diesel does.

Message on dash is first thing to help.

I can never remember which crank and which do not, but if the alarm is triggered there should be the "Engine immobilised press remote" on the dash.

Thanks for the replies gents, sorry it's took me a while to get back, I've just woke up. After a short trickle charge, it started straight away. There were no warnings on the dash apart from the usual ones, a manual and an exclamation mark. They've been on for over 5 years so I'm afraid I just ignore them. Thanks again.
