I can not log on to the General Chat bit, so I am making me own one :)
Otherwise I'll just waffle in the pub!

I need some help with my new PC (well it aint new it was my mates) anyway it has "Windows xp" whatever that is??
I need to wipe off all the programmes that my mate and her kids had on the pc........at the moment when I turn it on EMINEM is the 1st thing I see!! Not what I want to see, LOL! So how do I get rid of it all and set it up for what I want?

I have subscribed to Tiscali

Downloadable up to 2Mbps.
Unlimited monthly usage.
modem and connection.
email anti-spam and anti-virus.
dedicated customer support.

So hopefully I have got the right package? Seemed ok when I spoke to the guy on the phone.
I am hoping that it will come with some sort of set up info, coz I don't have a clue?? :)

Oh and will I need to buy a security package for the pc?

Thanks,
Maria....................oh and there will be loads more pc related Q's coz I'm bound to mess it up! :D

yes get an anti virus package and dont forget to get an anti-spywear package too.
your choice - Norton, mcAffee, Kaspersky are all got a/v packages.
I personally find spysweeper good too. make sure you regularly (automatically) get updates and pay for license continuity.
everyone has their favs tho.

Ok, thanks..........where do i get the anti-spywear from? It comes with an anti-virus thingy.......it says so up there /\

email anti-spam and anti-virus.
first mistake - it says "EMAIL" anti virus - thats coz they got that on their server - YOU need anti virus on YOUR computer - so mcAffee, Norton or Kaspersky - there are others. McAffee and Norton are low priced products which have captured the majority of the end-user market, but have limitations - Kaspersky is one of the more professional systems. NO ANTI-VIRUS PROG WILL CATCH EVERY VIRUS! - at work here we use all 3 mentioned above (one on each pc) and cross scan every evening - it is surprising what one system picks up and another doesnt. Personally I like Kaspersky, but it is a personal choice - others will, no doubt, say it is crap....

As for Anti-Spyware there are, again several, but I have found Spysweeper to be very effective, but like all of these systems, you need to set it up properly, use it regularly (every day) and update it regularly. The number of times i have had customers which have said "it cant be a virus - i have **** software" - and then we discover it hasnt been updated for 3 years!!
I work very closely with a McAffee virus investigator - and they regularly (every month) get several thousand "new" viruses sent to them.

oh - and BACKUP critical stufff regularly so when you do get hit - you can recover easily - we all say we do, but usually just AFTER we have rebuilt the bloody machine!;):D

Back to the computer for a bit..............where can I get RJ11 cable from?
I have been reading up and I was going to get phone line extention cable and run it from my Dad's office/storeroom to my house then connect the modem to that.........but it would seem that the modem has to be connected to the filter via the RJ11 cable.

So I have a problem my house has no BT landline........can I connect the modem to the filter and main BT wall socket in my Dad's office via the 2 metre RJ11 cable Tiscali are going to supply? And how is the modem connected to the PC? Can I run normal phone cable from the modem to the PC???

If this is a stupid question I'm sorry but I will have loads more :D

guess who :D

you need an rj11 extn lead of whatever length you require - the modem is normally coupled by a usb cable - but you mite be better orf going wireless - speak to Tiscali
the other option is to ask them for a modem/router and connect via rj45 network cable - also from yours truly.
ask mondeo ;)

I found out yesterday that talking to tiscali can be very difficult.........especially when you are talking to a guy in India????

So can I buy a long length of rj11 cable as in at least 30m connect that to the filter, that in turn is connected to the BT socket on the wall. Run thr rj11 cable to my house then connect the modem to it?? :)
You love me really, just tell ya self that when you are getting angry with me :D

30 metres on rj11 is pushing ya luck - chances are it might not work. Specially if it is outside (not designed for external applications)
your best choice is to ask bt to put on a telephone point in yo house - failing that run an rj45 cable from the network card in yo pc (yu DO have one?) - to a modem/router in yo dads place next to his phone line.
