Hello all,

My first post !

I have a 2013 Freenlander 2 SD4, 6 speed auto. I love the model, shape etc but hate the gearbox. Does anyone know of a conversion to the new 9 speed box from the evoke or disco sport?

The new shapes do nothing for me, want to keep the FL shape.

Don't know much about these things, but I'd imagine the engines are different, as is the comms etc... So you'd probably have better luck swapping box, engine, transmission, and all the electronics over - basically take an Evoke/DSport and rebody it!

Would probably be cheaper to take a Evoke/DSport to a panel beater and tell him to make it look like a Freelander :)

FL2 never went above 6 gears on manual and auto.
What does the OP not like about the FL2 SD4 auto? Is it broke'd or just doesn't like driving auto's?

Auto for me any day. Especially on a vehicle that doesn't have low range. I suffer a TD4 because I prefer auto, without the silly MPG of the V6.

As for the OPs question. Anything is possible, but not at all practical. Stick with the auto or buy a Disco Sport;)

I believe from 2013 on they have same engine and running gear as early evokes, hense my hope that there might be an aftermarket conversion kit

i find the 6 speed too vague in 2/3

The ratios are fine, it's just the messy changes, mainly between 2 and 3, not decisive, engine takes a while to fall to the speed of the higher gear.

The slow change up is deliberate. Many auto box drivers prefer a smooth gear change. The only way to get this, is to modulate the valves, to slow the changes.
Can you recommend anyone who does re-mapping who I could ask?
No but Google is your friend for that ;)
Might just need a fluid change in the autobox to smooth it out.
I'd try a tuning chip first to see if that helps, then have the remap done if you like the results and you can sell the chip on.

As Mike said.
Definitely worth changing the transmission fluid first. It cures all sorts of problems. If it's done more than 50K miles, get it done ;)

The sd4 I ran was always a harsh change compared to earlier td4 model which you couldn't fault, till it lost all drive on a busy roundabout, swapped the sd4for an evoke sd4 auto 6 spd, and I felt the engine/ box was about as perfect as you could wish for, I suspect fine tuning of the engine and gearbox ecu's will help you a lot!

The FL2 SD4 should be smooth. Change up on gentle acceleration will show changes for 2nd at 12, 3rd at 22 and 4th at 33mpg on the dash. If change is rough then something is wrong. If accelerating faster then it will hold gears longer and therefore change up at higher mph. There were some software updates for the auto but only if yer had a problems. Like bad down change on 3 to 2. Some set-p issues causing a pause before pulling away occasionally. Pulling away in 2nd by mistake cause auto problems.

Problem is does the OP think there's a problem compared to other identical FL2's he/she has driven or just unhappy with it. If yer int driven others yerself try to drive another. Probably easier to get another owner to drive yours. They will comment if it feels the same. It has adaptive thinking so monitors yer driving to try to work with you to suit yer driving style. It will also be changing gears to suit a relaxed revs compared to what's required. If yer on/off the revs around a gear change point then it will keep changing to suit. When going from cruising to sudden bursts of acceleration it may choose to drop down 1 gear. You could always test drive another at a main dealer then walk away, or get them to test drive yours.

Peeps who buy the auto's with 8 or 9 speed's often say they feel it's changing too often. This down to it knowing 1 gear change will cut say 150 revs and be more efficient when cruising. Early Evoque's had the same FL2 SD4 engine and 6 speed auto. Later changing to the 9 speed auto when the ingenium range of engines came out. The Disco sport started with the same FL2 SD4 engine but later changed to the ingenium range, both using the 9 speed auto. Regardless of it being possible to change the auto electrically or not, with computer issues likely, the replacement auto alone will cost a lot before work starts.
