Guys Just Aquired A Set Of Genuine L/r Side Steps,
Got The Riv-nuts And Have Located The Holes To Put Them In,
When They Arrived The Attatchment Brackets Were Not Insitu,
After Much Photo Looking On E-bay Ive Discovered That The Long Bracket With The Two Straight Attatchment Lugs Go To The Fat End Of The Step(the Rear)
And The Short Bracket Goes On The Front,
When You Marry It Up To The Chassis And Side Sill You Have A Straight Horizontal(on The Chassis Member)
And A Straight Vertical(on The Sill),
So Why The Angled Bit On The Sill Attatchment Lug(short Bracket)???the Lug That Bolts Onto The Sill Side,
If It Was Straight Like The Others It Would Fit Perfect,
Ive Checked It Out Against The Other Side Bracket And Theyre Exactly The Same So They Havent Been Accidentaly Bent,
Any Ideas Guys??
Ime Thinking Of Bashing THE ATTATCHMENT LUG Straight...should I Do This??
 
EM! No, and i would advise that unless you have the tool to get the rivets in and you can het the car on a platform, i wouldnt attempt it.

My mate is a plant mechanic and it took him ages to get them in, and that was with the right tool.

I'm sure someone will correct me though
 
Sharky I Know How Much Of A t@@t They Can Be To Get In But The Question Was Why Is There A Bent Lug On One Of The Brackets...thanks Jeff

Are these the STC 7941 your on about?
Cos ive just had a shuft at the instuctions and cant work out where this bent bit yer on about is,
it all looks self explanatry to me, No offence mate
 
Mondo Just Looked They Say Stc53077 On Both Steps Me Thinks That They May For The Old Type Of Landy?
What I Have Got Is Two X Fitting Brackets One Short And One Long,which Bolt To The Steps
On Each There Are X2 Lugs,
On The Short Bracket Theres A Bent Lug The One That Bolts To The Sill Side Ine Lug Is Horizontal That Bolts To The Chassis Member And The Other Is Vertical It Bolts To The Sill Side Wall,
Its The Lug That Bolts To The Side Wall Mate,
I Have Looked At Them Both And They Are Definately Made That Way And Not Bent By Abuse,
I Just Didnt Want To Straighten Them Flat Just Incase I Had Been A Total Numpty And Missed Something When Trying To Fit Them

Still cant see why they would need to have the bent bit,Sorry!

Wait and see if anyone comes up with a solution, if not then ,Big hammer,
cant see you causing and problems, if its bent where I think it is??

ime going to beat the crap out of it tomorrow will let you all know how it goes,
really looking forward to getting the riv-nuts in too,
if you hear any news bulletins about a plane crash or earthquake in the south wales area dont be alarmed its me with a bigger hammer thanks guys...

ps can i sell my front black a frame to anywhone?its the early model fits the landys with the one bar fronts with the holes either side wont fit mine
 
hi guys/gals,just picked up my new<ish> 05 td4 sport last weekend,bril i love it already,anyway, sidesteps when it says it includes a fitting kit with the steps,does that mean just the brackets because i've had a look underneath and there does seem to be anything to fix them to,i haven't actually bought any yet so now i am in two minds whether to get them fitted or fit them myself.
ps enjoy reading posts seems like a good laugh owning a landrover
 
The fixing holes are covered by little round black covers that can either be peeled off or, stick a screwdriver in it and pull them off, the kits come with all the bolts, rivets and screws, that you will need.
 
Yeah when I fitted mine it was a bit of a 'mare. I didn't lift it up but I'm quite small, but getting the angles to get the rivets in was difficult. Maaan those rivets are difficult to get it!! Also mine aren't official steps - but I like em. Although the back of the step rubs a little against the car at the back but not too much.

Only worry is that I've fitted those rivets OK! Hope the steps don't come flying off at any point!!

Do you have a pic of the A Frame at all? I may be interested....:rolleyes:
 
mmm, bolts,brackets,screws,ok.But what are the rivets for and do you need a special tool to put them in.At this moment i can imagine loads of freelanders driving around with their steps pop rivet to the body<probably not but what sort of rivets are they. cheers.:eek:
 
I got a tool with mine which was basically a piece of metal with a hole in it! But basically you pop one of the rivet nuts into the hole with a bolt in it. As you turn the bolt the rivet nut collapses and gets fatter and fills the hole.
I found it difficult as when it got too tight, the rivet kept turning and turning with the bolt and so wouldn't collapse easily.
 
No - I did it on a hot day, which wasn't too pleasant. But I wouldn't do it on a wet day either!! I'm sure there must be better tools out there but I couldn't be arsed to go to B&Q halfway through the task of putting them on.
 
Hi all,

To ease life for those who want to install these sidesteps I'll keep my reputation intact and attach a couple of pictures of mine which are genuin e LR ones and were mounted at the dealer. This way you can check how the shape is supposed to be, where to fit the rivets etc....

Yep i found it the same as Wingee a real pain ta fit but after a lot of sweating they do hold good ,ya can by them from LR and not too exspensive and they are called rivnuts. . .:)
