Once my back is better I am planning to fit an auxiliary 12V socket in the boot for compressors nd maybe a solar trickle charger. Plan is to splice into the trailer auxiliary socket electrics on the LHS. I've had a look in RAVE and just confirm my understanding:

Red permanent live?
Blue to ground?
Green does what? Seems to be on with the reversing lights?

There should already be a power supply socket in the boot area in and around the trailer harness, behind small panel at rear left side of boot for fitting auxiliary power socket STC8835. Just to add it may not be live with ignition off i think it is powered from auxiliary power relay 6. ;);)

I already have the trailer socket wired up, it came with full electrics. This is to put a cigarette lighter type power outlet in the boot above where the panel is for the bulb replacement.

For some reason I thought it was permanently live. Well, guess I'll find out once I start cutting!

I can't find any runs or colours for it in the diagrams. Unless i am missing something obvious. But according to the fitting diagrams in RAVE for STC8853 it is there. If relay 6 runs it cant think why or how it would be live without ignition. The accessory socket fitted in the boot on 1999 on cars runs from relay 7 same as cig lighter so is only live with ignition in position 2 or better.

Well, on the upside that's good because I could put it where them in the back could use it. On the downside it does kill the solar top-up panel idea without laying another cable.

In my version of RAVE: electrical Troubleshooting --> 1995 4th edition --> Circuit --> P1 Trailer auxiliary socket on page 270.

The red wire seems to come straight off fuse 14 in the BECM with no other interference.

If there is twin electrics on the towbar there will/should be a permanent live. This is to power lights etc in the caravan if caravan battery is dead.
Pin 4 on 12s (grey) socket or pin 9 if it's a euro type 13 pin socket.
Both coloured green (or should be)
Hope that helps.

This is true, 20 amp live from BECM for caravan lighting could be used for auxiliary power to boot. I did miss something obvious. ;):D:D

Aha. So, red is switched but green is permanent 12V. Hmmm. Decisions, decisions ...

Easy to check with a meter. I would think unless they have been modified not many P38s will have 13 pin trailer plugs. Mine has been modded and has two plugs. The Land rover removable tow bar kit STC8939 had a seven pin plug. So considering the P38 went out of production before the thirteen pin standard came in cannot see it having matching looms for the thirteen pin standard.

Think mine is original. Don't remember many pins in there and most are blank but to be honest I've never used it as I don't have a caravan. RAVE shows only 3 wires as above so plenty of spare pins!

Back is feeling better so hopefully I'll have a look.

Basically for a trailer you need stop lamps, tail lights, left and right indicator, fog lamp and ground. So six wires bare minumum.

No, no, the other side. The LHS for the auxiliary power for the caravan. The trailer electrics go down the RHS of the car. And yes, many more wires down that side!

Isn't it to run the fridge/freezer when you are mobile?

The red one runs the fridge and should be on a voltage controlled relay so it doesn't flatten the battery when using lots of electrical equipment but many are just wired to an ignition feed.

Think you had better study the tow bar fitting and auxiliary power point for the boot space fitting in RAVE.

Well, that was interesting. The external socket has 7 pins, the bottom one is permanent 12V. I followed the loom but it split! A yellow wire and a white wire went up into the car. The white went to ground. The yellow one went to a green and something striped wire that had been cut out of the socket.

the rest of the loom went along the chassis, across the bulkhead, through a voltage sensitive switch (presumably stops power if battery voltage drops below a certain level?) and a relay and was plumbed into the fusebox somewhere. So I ignored it! It all looked very professional.

Going back to the 6 pin socket in the boot it had a pink and orange wire that was permanent 12V as per RAVE, also a black one for ground. Seeing as the socket is not required and one wire was already cut, I cut those 2 and wired the power socket in.

Good job. ;);)

If you look behind the LHS rear lights you'll find this.

At least you do on my MY1998 4.6HSE.

Black is Earth
Green is reversing lamps.
Pink and Orange is permanent 12V live. Fed from 20A Fuse14 in the BECM.
White and Orange is switched 12V fed from Relay 7 in the BECM. It also powers the LHS antenna amplifier if fitted, and is not used in the aux trailer socket according to RAVE.

The white plug you see is C365, it's got a rather neat little clip to hold it if it's not been used. If you have an aux trailer socket fitted the official LR loom plugs in here.

When I fitted my power outlet in the boot, I connected up to Black and Pink and Orange. It works perfectly.
