Right so iv just got mt disco 200tdi wired up in my 90!

Just got all the pipes fitted and ready to go. I took off the fuel seloniod wire and turned it over a few turns to prime everythin. Put the wire back on turned it over a couple of times until it fire up.

Masses and masses of smoke from exhorst. Ticked over realy lumpy for a bit..... tried the trottle and cut out.
Did the same again a couple of times until i could rev it up a bit (Still masses of smoke coming out) But when i let go of throttle it cut out again.

It now fires up first tun over but is very lumpy and loadsa smoke and no power!
Tried bleeding the injector......still same!!!

Does anyone no whats at fault?

Did the motor run nice before you fited it ? , if so what have you done to it before you fitted it ( timing belt etc ) .

leave it running for 20 minutes, while keeping an eye open for leaks and over temp - don't touch the throttle - even during the startup

what color is the smoke ?

don't panic

Its grey smoke (smells very strong of unburned deisel)

I bought the engine from a breaker, i hadnt had it going until yesterday as it came on a pallet. May sound daft but as engines go it looks in really good nick (Everything looks nearly new and clean)

Whilst it was still on the pallet i did the timing belt (Even that looked new and nowhere near worn but swapped it anyway)
When i did the belt im 95% certain that the pullys didnt turn whilst fitting, however it was a while back and i cant physicaly remebering checking the 'line up markers' (Im sure i would have though as i were quite thourough) i also locked the pulley off with a drill bit.

It does actualy sound as though its getting too much fuel with the smell of the fumes and all the smoke?

How do i adjust the pump without taking it all apart again?

Cheers guys

This happened on a friends 200Tdi we just finished.
This is the quick, easy and "dirty" bodging method that requires the least amount of work to get it running.

I adjusted the pump timing by:
Remove the small circular plate on the timing cover (3 screws) in front of the Injection Pump (IP).
Make sure you mark up the main nut with the 3 smaller bolts.
Undo the 3 smaller bolts.
Put a good tight fitting socket on the main pump shaft nut.
Whack the ratchet with a mallet one direction. I did it clockwise.
Tighten the 3 smaller bolts.
Start the engine and see if it better.
If it isn't whack the ratchet anti-clockwise past the initial timing point.
Repeat this process until it runs properly.

AsI said this will get it running better. There are proper ways but if you are working outside in this weather you will want a fast bogde like I did.

Thanks patman il give it a go!

When you say whack the rachet clockwise/anticlockwise, is that on the nut on the timing pulley?

Also is this plausable?? At the mo i dont have an exhorts on, just the down pipe. So when i start the landy up, it runs ok (But not well) for about 10 seconds then when the entire engine bay is covered in fumes (Even with the bonnet lifted right up to the screen) it runs very lump then cuts out! The turbo inlet has no pipe on it yet either so do you think it might be running lumpy and cutting out because it is sucking in its own exhorst fumes and not clean air??

Scott

connect the full exhaust up !

Do you think that could be the posible cause of it sean?

Should the fumes die down after i given it a good run do you think?

there's only one way to find out, plus the engine needs some back pressure from the exhaust

try to easy simple things before you start messing with IPs

Yeah will do mate. Iv given up though for now im too bloody cold!

Id love a nice warm workshop......id still be out there now if i did!

Cheers mate!
