Well its time for me to say bye bye to my range rover,as much as i love it when its going it seems to enjoy being fixed more than it does doing any work, unfortunately i dont have the cash to keep throwing at it so its got to go.

Reason for this being whilst driving it home yesterday the new viscous fan i fitted about 2 weeks ago decided to blow apart when i put my foot down to overtake a car taking with it the radiator, both oil cooling pipes and the power steering reservoir.....making an unholy mess in the process, luckily i pulled over before any real damage was done and got a ride home on the back of an AA truck.

Tim frys where i bought the fan from are adamant it must have been rubbing on something before it went so are refusing to replace it or anything, thing is there was nothing for it to rub on as the cowling had been removed and it had been fine for the 1000 miles leading up to this....

So just thought id say thanks to you all for all the help and advice youve given me in my short time on here, youre a good bunch of guys but unfortunately P38 ownership is not for me,has been a case of never meet your heroes lol.

Sad to hear.... but no reason you can't stay?

Moral of the story is... don't ever fit a Sh*tpart viscous fan (or other cheap and nasty brand)...

Sale of goods act job IMO. There should be nothing that the fan could rub on and it would have made quite a racket. There is a thread about duff goods and the law, or consult the CAB. Personally I would warn them that small claims court action is likely.

My fan was hitting the stainless steel bracket for the EGR pipe after I removed the fan cowl. Don't believe it was hitting it before I took the cowl off.

although it came from a dealer was it a britpart one, had 2 diesel viscous fans fail one within 30 secs of starting the next in a couple of days!
and iam not the only person this has happened too!!!!!!!!

I would collect all the bits together and examine them carefully.
It would strengthen your claim if there is no evidence of rubbing. Better still if there is evidence of pre existing cracking in the metal.
Think about getting an independent report done by a motor engineer to help pursue a claim. All manufacturers have product liability insurance.

Anyone ever fitted an electric fan to their P38?
And don't leave Landyzone  the next poor sod with similar problems might benefit from your experience. What car are you moving to if any?

The aircon fans, as has been detailed many times, work well for cooling without the viscous on the diesel, and as back up to the viscous on the petrol, add a small Kenlowe and you can bin the viscous on the V8 as well:)

cheers guys,i will keep popping on to see what youre all up to :)

havent decided what to replace him with yet,the other halfs got an old frontera with the 2.8 isuzu engine in it so that will be used for towing duties for now till i decide what to go for, possibly will get another trooper or have seen a few patrols i like the look of.

Rangey will be fixed up and sold on,i may contact trading standards about the fan situation but to be honest i can see it dragging out into a long winded story, the guy was adamant they werent going to admit responsibility for the fan being faulty and was pretty adamant he would be able to tell it had been rubbing on somthing by inspecting the pile of scrap plastic ive got left, quite how i dont know....gonna wait till weathers a bit better and take it apart bit by bit but its definately gonna need a new rad,oil cooler pipes and pas reservoir and thats just from having a quick look, its lost pretty much all fluids but hopefully hasnt done any lasting damage as i pulled up and switched it off pretty sharpish...

will keep you posted and get some pics up

well, two days and 450 quid later i have a semi running range rover,it decided it needed both oil cooler pipes,a new radiator,a new oil cooler, both pas pipes and reservoir and then to top it all off after refitting the viscous it was noticed to be wobbling, turns out its bent the water pump shaft as well so guess what im doing tomorrow........they dont do things by halfs do they

so your fixing it then ?? lol

by the sounds of your first post it sounded like you was going to scrap it ? ha

petrol and matches maybe :p

Lol i can assure you there have been more than one occasion this weekend where the other half has had to hide the lighters and fuel...had to fix it as it wasnt any good to anyone as it was...

its still going tho dont worry about that, quickly before it decides to chew up anything else!! my poor wallet cant take much more...

cheers mate ;) It was worth it while it lasted and tbh im secretly sad its got to go but i just cant justify it doing anything else like this weekend, not good for business and the other halfs threatening to put my subarus up on ebay if it doesnt go sharpish so its a no brainer, got a heck of a lot of motorway munching coming up soon so dont want to risk it.

Someones gonna get a bargain tho, hope it goes to a good home.
