In summer we're going to do a stripdown and rebuild of my landy. My Dad's had the idea of fibreglassing the bottom of the bulkhead ad other underneath areas so that any mud and water doesn't come into contact with the metal.
What do you think?

what about the water that comes in from above? you could just end up trapping it between fibreglass and metal leaving you with a fibreglass bulkhead

NOT a good idea thumps bumps and vibration will separate fiberglass from metal and water will find a way in setting off the rot.A good paint job, regular waxoil and extra mud flaps hanging down from the lower end of where the metal mud sheild fits stopping crud sticking to footwell and outrigger,or go the whole hog and galvanize it.

I decided to get a galvanised bulkhead from ashtree and got a local ish landy specialist to fit. They are expensive but as I have no room to strip and repair and cant weld myself, this assures plenty of life in the old girl.
I agree with trapping in water / salt etc with fibre grassing. Spray gets into every tiny crack and you would have no means of monitoring what's happening. A footwell on my old bulkhead was like that when I bought it and I could see the rust eating from inside and the fibre glass seemed to be gradually delaminating from the metal
